Wow – we’ve got a lot change going on at Weatherstone!

I am sad to lose Mrs. Wahl. In the past two years as PTA President, I’ve been privileged to get a glimpse of the amazing complexity of the principal’s job and see first hand what a savvy administrator and educator she truly is. She has dedicated many years of her life to Weatherstone and is leaving us in a position of excellence. I wish her well as the Principal of Northwoods Elementary.

However, at the same time, I am excited to let you know that you have a chance to shape the job description and requirements of our new principal. I hope you’ll take time to make the most of this opportunity. Please join myself and Jacqueline Ellis, our Western Wake Area Superintendant, for a Parent Input session this Thursday, May 24th at 5:30 p.m. in the media center.

Ms. Ellis will meet with any parents who wish to provide input concerning the selection of our new principal. The following are examples of feedback that we can provide: desired characteristics, qualities, assets, traits, as well as particular skills and experiences.

The information we provide will be used to develop a principal profile and a list of questions and issues for applicant screening and selection.

If you can’t be there in person, you can also provide feedback through e-mail (send to jellis@wcpss.net). If you don’t feel comfortable sharing your input verbally at the session, you can give written feedback to Ms. Ellis during the session.

All parents are welcome and you can either stay for the whole session, or give your feedback and leave.

Again, I thank Mrs. Wahl for all she has done. She and our Assistant Principal, Mr. Chadwick – were responsible for helping us procure the STEM designation. Please take time to write her a note of thanks or verbally tell her how much you appreciate all the good she’s done for Weatherstone.

I hope to see you Thursday – and urge you to please take time and put thought into your input concerning the selection of our new principal.

5TH GRADE RECOGNITION CEREMONY

KEEP CLIPPING – Box Tops Needed

WES Students celebrated collecting over $1,600 in Box Tops on Thursday, April 26th with an extra 10 minutes of recess time. Our next goal of $2,000 in Box Tops will be a popsicle party for the entire school. If every student brings in 5 Box Tops, we will reach our goal quickly. You might have 5 Box Tops in your pantry right now. Please keep clipping those Box Tops and help your whole school get a popsicle party. And, remember to clip and save them over the summer. The collection bin is located outside the media center.

Target’s Take Charge of Education Program: How you can help…

Please help us take advantage of this program offered by the Target Corporation. If you get a Target REDcard or already have an account, please select Weatherstone as your designated school . The easiest way to do this is to call 1-800-316-6142, or register and track our progress via the Target Take Charge of Education website, using the school locator (School ID 462). Any Target Visa Credit Card and Target Credit Card user can designate WES (so tell all relatives and friends to designate WES – regardless their homestate). My mom in Florida and our relatives in Chicago are earning money for Weatherstone.

Since January 2012, we have had 10 new families designate WES, bringing our total number to 39. Thanks to our WES Target shoppers, WES has accumulated $1010. Make your summer shopping count, and register your card today!

Fundraising Update

I am pleased to announce that our spring fundraiser, the Spring Carnival, held on April 21, 2012 brought in over $10K. This event is the only “active” fundraiser for the second half of the year, so its success was crucial. Our other fundraisers have been established to bring in funds without directly asking, (i.e., Box Tops, Target RedCards, Matching Gifts programs, and Dining for Dollars events). The goal of the Box Tops program was $2K (that’s 20,000 Box Tops). We are on pace to meet that goal, earning $800 in January (from summer collections), $800 in March, and hopefully, make the $400 goal for the end of the year target. Below are the amounts for the fundraising programs from January to present.

Since January, the PTA has funded a variety of educational programs and items including: technology for the classroom (specifically, 3 Smart boards), Cultural Arts Assembly, Science Day, sunshade for the playground, curriculum support, teacher/staff recognition luncheon, new books for media center, student planners for Grades 3-5, First in Fitness t-shirts, website and communications.

The PTA is able to provide these programs and items to your children because of fundraising efforts, so thank you for your support! However, these fundraisers, and thus the programs that they support, will not occur without volunteers. Specifically, we are currently looking for Chairs to run Boosterthon and Spring Carnival. I am currently researching other fundraising endeavors for WES. If you have new ideas to benefit our school community, I welcome your input.

May Spotlight Volunteer – Sarah Ericksen

Congratulations to our PTA Spotlight Volunteer for May, Sarah Ericksen.

Sarah is the chairperson for the Yearbook Committee. She is responsible for taking photos of student activities and planning the design and layout of the yearbook. Every year, the yearbook committee amazes us with colorful photos of our students participating in school activities throughout the year! Our yearbook serves as a time capsule that records school events through the eyes of the students and teachers. The yearbook is a great keepsake and will be distributed at the end of May.

Sarah has been volunteering at WES for two years. She has volunteered for numerous classroom activities such as Book-A-Bite and Learning Experiences. Sarah has two children: Audrey who is in 1st grade and Isaac who will be starting Kindergarten next year.

During the month of May, the “PTA Volunteer” parking spot will be reserved for Sarah’s exclusive use. Please help us honor Sarah by leaving the space available.

WES Campus Clean-up Day

Thanks to all the enthusiastic volunteers who showed up for our April 28^th Spring Clean-Up Day! We had a small but hard-working group who weeded the Memory Garden and other planting beds (a big task), picked up trash and limbs and planted flowers. I also would like to give kudos to our volunteers that helped out in the Fall cleanup as well…we hauled dozens of wheelbarrows of mulch to replenish the planting beds around the front of the school and the group also weeded, planted flowers and cleaned up the grounds.

Your Campus Improvement Team is continuing to explore ways to improve the grounds at Weatherstone Elementary and we hope to begin implementing some of the projects that were identified in the new Campus Master Plan over the course of the next few years.

Weatherstone Elementary Joins the WCPSS STEM Schools Collaborative Network

WCPSS announced this week that Weatherstone is one of the newest members of the STEM Network. You might be wondering what that means for students, staff and families of our school. Please read the brief description below taken from the WCPSS website:

Do you want your student to be an inventor, scientist, architect or astronaut? The foundation of learning for these high-tech jobs of tomorrow begins with four letters – S.T.E.M. (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics).

The WCPSS STEM Schools Collaborative Network is a group of 17 schools, dedicated to enhanced strategic planning, professional development, programming and community advocacy around advancements in science and technology.

These schools benefit from a regional and statewide network of shared instructional opportunities and connections to local, state and national leaders focused on the STEM curriculum.

Each school will have:

Expert Technology Facilitators
Interactive lessons that explore STEM concepts
Digital-age learning environments
iPad carts (30 iPads) for each grade level

The 2012-2013 school year will be the continuation of Weatherstone’s technological advancement that has included the purchasing of document cameras and interactive white boards for all grade levels. Furthermore, Weatherstone Elementary has selected to integrate the STEM model by incorporating Music and Visual Arts as its design option.

Each STEM Collaborative Network School will provide students with curricula and learning experiences that promote STEM literacy. Using the NCSU Engineering Design Process as a foundational learning strategy, schools will choose one as a focus for delivering STEM literacy.

Through interdisciplinary project-based learning activities, students will use artistic methods to show their understanding of concepts, events, or objects. Schools foster curiosity, creativity, and problem-solving while encouraging students to question, observe, identify patterns, and construct meaning.

GROUNDS CLEAN UP DAY

Grounds Clean-Up Day is Saturday, April 28th, at 9:00am. We need families to help us spruce up our campus (e.g., remove weeds, pick up trash and plant flowers). Silent Auction FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS (FAQs)
What if I forget my money and would like to buy an item at the Silent Auction?
Anyone that is interested in purchasing an item may make a bid on the bid sheets during the auction times. If you forgot your checkbook or did not being enough cash to cover the cost of the item you won, you may arrange to pick up and pay for the item the following Mon, Tues, or Wed (April 22-24),from 8:45-9:15 AM.

Can I bid on multiple items?
By all means, but you are obligated to purchase every item that you are the highest bidder.

Can my children make bids for me?
No, we prefer only adults (18 and over) to make bids. This ensures parent approval.

What if I am not able to stay the entire time of the auction?
You may designate someone to write your name/contact information on the bid sheets. You will be notified if you are the winner.

What can we expect for a starting bid?
All bids will start at approximately 1/2 the value listed in the ‘Value’ column below.
